Most AI projects fail not because of the model, but because of everything around it. The conversation usually starts with excitement about accuracy scores and proof-of-concepts, but stalls when it's time to actually deploy something users can rely on.

The gap nobody talks about

A model that works in a notebook is nowhere near production-ready. You need data pipelines that don't break, monitoring to catch drift, fallback logic when predictions fail, and integration with existing systems. Most teams underestimate this by 5-10x in time and complexity.

Data quality is the real bottleneck

Your model is only as good as the data you feed it. If your training data has inconsistencies, missing fields, or doesn't reflect reality, no amount of tuning will fix it. We see this constantly: teams spend months on model architecture when they should be cleaning their data pipeline first.

Production means different standards

In production, you need reliability, explainability, and maintainability. You need to handle edge cases, monitor performance over time, and have a plan when things go wrong. Most AI projects focus on the happy path and ignore everything else until it's too late.

Start simple, prove value first

Instead of building the perfect AI system, start with the simplest version that delivers real value. Use rule-based logic if it works. Build the infrastructure. Prove the business case. Then iterate toward more sophisticated models when you have clean data and proven value.

AI in production is an engineering problem, not just a data science problem. The teams that succeed treat it that way from day one.
